SSDI CONSIDERS OSPREY CE ALLOYS AS 'PRIME MATERIAL' FOR USE IN POWER MODULE BASPLATES
25 February 2003 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK

Solid States Devices, Inc. (SSDI) recently completed an extensive range of tests on Osprey Metals' silicon/aluminum 'CE (Controlled Expansion) Alloys' and found that they offer a significant price and performance improvement over aluminum/silicon/carbon (AlSiC) and copper/tungsten (CuW) materials.

For example, unlike AlSiC, the CE Alloys are machinable and plateable using conventional methods, and the price of CE Alloys (eg CE7 with a 7ppm/C coefficient of expansion) is typically about half that of Cu/W. 'We are very pleased with these findings,' said Dr. Alan Leatham, Osprey Metals' Sales and Marketing Director and Company Co-founder. 'Since their introduction in 1999, Osprey CE Alloys continue to find their way into a broad range of microelectronic applications. SSDI is widely recognised as a market leader and innovator, and this is an important step in our efforts to bring the benefits of CE Alloys to the Power Semiconductor Arena.'

SSDI is known today, throughout the world, as a leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of electronic components, assemblies, modules, and sub-systems. Spanning four decades as a pioneer semiconductor manufacturer, SSDI has earned and maintained a reputation for setting the highest standards of reliability and performance. This reputation is founded on unsurpassed technology and quality in the areas of high density/high power and high voltage discrete semiconductors and modules.

Osprey Metals was formed in 1974 to develop and license its proprietary spray forming and powder production technologies. The company now uses these technologies to manufacture it own products, which include spray formed Si/Al alloys (Osprey CE Alloys) for use in electronic applications and alloy powders in a wide range of compositions for use in various different applications. Since 1985, Osprey has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sandvik Group of Companies and therefore benefits from the resources of a worldwide manufacturing and marketing organisation.
