RADSTONE APPROVES USE OF OSPREY METALS' CONTROLLED EXPANSION ALLOY GUIDE BARS
21 November 2002 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK
| Controlled expansion, aluminium silicon, PCB guide bars, produced by Osprey Metals Ltd, have been approved and are now in regular use at Radstone Technology, one of the world's leading independent suppliers of embedded computer products.

The Osprey Metals' controlled expansion, aluminium silicon, CE17Mg alloy has been approved to replace a tungsten/copper (W/Cu) alloy. Manufactured with Osprey Metals' proprietary spray forming process, CE17Mg alloy offers lower cost, improved wear resistance and a substantial weight saving, - about one with the weight of W/Cu. So successful has the new material been, that Radstone Technology are investigating other applications where the cost, weight and machining advantages of the Osprey CE Alloys can be exploited against traditional controlled expansion materials such as tungsten/copper (W/Cu), tungsten/molybdenum (W/Mo) and aluminium/silicon/carbon (AlSiC). A range of standard Osprey Si/Al alloys (CE7, 9, 11, 13, 17) is available with Si contents in the range 70 to 17%, with corresponding Coefficients of thermal expansion of 7 - 17ppm/°C. The alloys combine controlled thermal expansion with low density (<2.5g/cm3), high thermal conductivity, high specific stiffness and are machinable and plateable using conventional methods.
