BOREALIS HAS DEVELOPED A PIONEERING HALOGEN-FREE FLAME RETARDANT COMPOUND FOR JACKETING OF ENERGY CABLES
30 December 2006 - DOE/Sandia National Laboratories

Borealis, the world’s leading provider of polyolefin compounds for the global wire and cable industry, has developed a pioneering halogen-free flame retardant compound for the jacketing of energy cables.

In addition to providing flame retardancy, new grade Casico FR6082 adds high physical strength, toughness and good UV protection to polyethylene based cable jackets.

Michael Bjørn, Marketing Manager for Borealis’ wire and cable business comments: “While initial demand for flame retardant power cable jacketing has come from specific European markets, FR6082 is suitable for broader use and we are seeing interest from many countries around the world. FR6082 benefits from the cost-effective attributes offered by Casico technology, making the compound an attractive, excellent performing solution for cable manufacturers and end-users.”

FR6082 is formulated to meet specific demands for a combination of physical toughness and low-toxic combustion fumes in energy cable jackets. The compound is characterised by its wear resistance, delivering the strength and toughness required for both overhead and underground energy cable applications. Well dispersed carbon black provides for excellent UV protection. A natural compound is also available for colourable energy cable jacketing.

FR6082 offers easy processing on extruders designed for either polyvinyl chloride or PE and enables production of cables with a smooth, glossy appearance. In addition, FR6082 offers all the benefits of Borealis’ patented Casico technology, providing a cost-effective, high performance alternative to traditional jacketing materials. Benefits include:

• lightweight and cost effective cables due to the modest amount of filler required in Casico technology

• physical toughness for protection at installation and use

• increased human safety and reduced structural damage in case of fire

Borealis has more than 40 years of experience in providing high-quality polyolefin compounds to the wire and cable market and is the world leader in this market segment.
