ROHM AND HAAS NEW AMBERPACK BORON REMOVAL SYSTEM PACKED WITH AMBERLITE IRA743 RESIN
03 December 2006 - Rohm & Haas Co
| Today no universally boron applied limit exists, but recent recommended values for boron range from 0.2 to 1 mg/l. Rohm and Haas AMBERPACK boron removal system packed with AMBERLITE IRA743 resin offers a safe, reliable, and cost-efficient solution. This unique resin, which complies with EU drinking water regulations, achieves boron concentrations less than 100 µg/l (0.1 ppm) and high drinking water yields up to 99 %. |
Boron is potentially harmful in drinking water at levels above 0.3 – 0.5 mg/l. For instance, average concentration in seawater is 5 mg/l. There is some uncertainty as to the health effects of low levels of boron in humans. Because of these uncertainties, the World Health Organization guidelines call for boron levels in drinking water ofless than 0.5mg/l. In the European Union, the 1998 boron standard in drinking water is 1 milligram per liter. The current trend in the desalination industry is to require a level less than0.3 mg/l. Boron is problematic for irrigation water at similar or lower levels andcertain agricultural crops, such as citrus, are highly boron sensitive. Boron in sea water is present in the form of boric acid. The AMBERPACK boron removal system requires little investment when installed and can be retrofitted for lower boron specifications. It needs no inert layer, has a low pressure drop and produces high water yields at the best water quality. Operating costs are proportional to boron inlet. The boron outlet is independent of inlet concentration and temperature. AMBERLITE IRA743 resin captures boron selectively. The resin forms a complex with borated ions. It owes its selectivity for boric acid to a unique, sugar-like active group: the methyl glucamine functional group. AMBERLITE IRA743 resin is capable of removing trace levels of boric acid from any type of water, even brackish water, and the residual concentration of boron is less than 100 µg/l (0.1 ppm) over a period of 7-10 years without performance loss. The resin removes only boron and does not react at all with the other ions present even at high concentrations, such as sodium, calcium, bicarbonate and chloride. Its operating capacity depends on the specific flow rate, salt concentration has little influence. AMBERLITE IRA743, as all Rohm and Haas ion exchange resins for potable water application, has a compliance certificate in accordance with EU Council Resolution ReSAP(2004)3 and with certain national legislation The currently used Amberpack system treats 6500 m3/day of reverse osmosis product water with 13 cubic meter Amberlite IRA743 resin. This world’s first ion exchange system for the selective removal of boron from potable water was installed in April 2006 at Mekorot’s brackish water desalination plant in Kziot, Israel by our partner Treitel Chemical Engineering Ltd.
