SANDVIK STEEL LAUNCHES APPLIED SOLUTIONS WEB PORTAL
20 March 2002 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK
| Sandvik Steel has launched a new web portal, through its www.steel.sandvik.com website, aimed at establishing partnerships with companies who wish to improve the performance or develop the next generation of equipment or processes, through the optimum use of raw materials.
|
Sandvik Steel Applied Solutions is part of the tube division of Sandvik Steel and is therefore focusing, in particular, on processes and equipment which incorporate stainless steel, titanium, high and special alloy tubes. Typical examples include furnace tubes, tubular reactors, heat exchangers, hydraulic and instrumentation systems, although it is expected that there are many other application areas where Sandvik Steel's R & D and materials processing expertise can be utilised. The belief behind the Applied Solutions web portal is that the most successful high performance alloys are those where the properties of the materials match most closely with the demands of the application in which they are used. Optimised materials enhance process performance and can reduce costs. Sandvik is therefore looking to work with partners to optimise current materials and develop next generation steels suited to specific requirements. A potential partner is therefore, any company whose processes or systems are compromised by the lack of an ideal or suitable steel. Says Magnus Nystrom manager for Sandvik Steel Applied Solutions, 'We recognise that today's materials will not always meet the technological demands of the future. We wish, therefore, to provide a platform whereby our customers can participate actively in the development of materials designed specifically for their next generation processes and applications. Improvements can be made to even the most successful materials through close cooperation with end users. There are already several examples of this - in particular, the development of the new steel grade, Safurex.' Cooperation between Sandvik Steel and Stamicarbon bv - the leading engineering company of urea plants - led to the development of the Sandvik Safurex steel grade, even though the existing stainless steel tubes were providing a working life of over 20 years. Stamicarbon developed the technique of reducing oxygen in the urea production process which made it possible to build more economical plants. Sandvik and Stamicarbon decided to work together to develop a new and better material to improve the process. The result was the new Sandvik Safurex grade which offers higher strength and better corrosion properties. For companies interested in developing discussions with Sandvik Steel Applied Solutions, contact can be made through the new web portal on the Sandvik Steel website www.steel.sandvik.com.
