VERSATILE GENERALIST AMONG INDUSTRIAL CHARGE AMPLIFIERS
17 January 2007 - Kistler Instruments

One of the characterizing features of piezoelectric measurement is that a single sensor has a range extending over several powers of ten. It achieves the same high precision in each of these decades.

The new ICAM Type 5073A… charge amplifier supports this very advantage. With just one system measuring chains with the ICAM and piezoelectric sensors can measure over six decades, for example from the smallest structural changes in the nano range to enormous press forces. Thus for these measurements from a few newtons to 250 kN with the same measuring chain charge amplifiers with a measuring range of at least 100 to 1 000 000 pC are necessary.

Practically all measuring ranges can be set on the new ICAM industrial charge amplifier thanks to its built-in electronics and computer interface. The ICAM thus adapts for any measuring task with just one sensor. With the ICAM the sensitivity can be taken from the data sheet or the calibration, and the maximum measuring range set in mechanical units with the parameters.

The ICAM is suitable for use with almost all piezoelectric sensors. The output signals can be used to measure or monitor an industrial measurement process. In addition to the measurement signal there is also a peak memory for each channel available for evaluation purposes. This means maximum and minimum values can be measured directly with the ICAM.

The ICAM also offers programmable fifth order filters with frequencies of 10, 200 and 3 000 Hz and a programmable offset. Even during measurement a digital input can be used to switch between the two measuring ranges possessed by each measuring channel. Each measuring channel has an output voltage of ±10 V with a minimum total error of just 0,5 % and excellent reproducibility of 0,05 %.

The ICAM is available in models with one to four channels in the same case and with the same hole pattern.

Despite its impressive technical characteristics the ICAM remains user friendly. Parameter assignment is based on a LabView application. The software is simply designed and self-explanatory. All parameters can be set on just a single screen that clearly displays all of the important functions. The software also has an import/export function to store or retrieve different configurations. The parameters can also be printed out clearly on a single sheet for documentation purposes.

About: Kistler Instruments
Kistler is one of the world's leading suppliers of measurement technology. Kistler pressure sensors, force sensors and accelerometers use the piezoelectric effect for precise measurement of mechanical properties.

Kistler is a privately-owned Swiss company which develops and manufactures sensors and electronics for measuring pressure, force and acceleration.

Additionally, the functionality of electronics plays an increasing role when defining a measuring system and even more frequently, electronics in fact becomes part of the sensor itself. Most of Kistler's products have been developed in close cooperation between leading universities or research facilities and Kistler's engineers.

Investments in Kistler's research department have led to the development of new crystals which enable reliable measurements to be taken under the most extreme environmental conditions. The results of our in-depth crystal research will give us a leading edge in advancing the state-of-the-art.
