LARGE COMPOSITE TUBE ORDERS FROM THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY
12 October 2000 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK

Sandvik Steel has recently received several large orders, valued at approximately SEK 40M, for advanced composite tubes for use in the pulp and paper industry.

The tubes are to be installed in black liquor recovery boilers in pulp and paper plants - a very corrosive environment with high demands on the properties of the material.

The customers involved are world leaders in the construction of black liquor recovery boilers. Among them is Kvaerner Pulping. Final delivery of the boilers is to pulp and paper plants in the USA, Brazil, Spain and Belgium.

Sandvik Steel is a world leader in the production of composite tubes for black liquor recovery boilers following many years' investment in research and development in this field.

Composite tubes are used in environments where the demands on the inside and the outside of a tube are such that they cannot be met with one type of steel. The composite tubes therefore consist of two types - an outer layer of a corrosion resistant material - in some cases an expensive, high alloyed steel - and an inner layer of a load-carrying, low-alloyed steel.

Because of the protecting outer layer, tubes can be in operation 3-5 times longer or, even more in some cases, than traditional carbon steel tubes.

Besides black liquor recovery boilers, composite tubes are used for waste incineration boilers and waste heat boilers in metallugial plants.
