BANDSAWS INCREASE SAWMILL PRODUCTIVITY
03 April 2000 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK

A change in sawing methods from circular saws to Sandvik Steel's Multishift™ bandsaws has seen an increase in productivity for Swedish sawmill Höglandssågen in Örnsköldsvik.

Producing at the comparatively high rate of about 5000m³ for each employee, Höglandssågen saws Scandinavian pine and fir in log sizes varying from 100mm up to 500mm diameter. The bandsaw blades being used are Sandvik Multishift with Stellite tipped tooth points. The blades are made by Sandvik subsidiary Suomen Sandvik Oy in Finland.

The first noticeable and key benefit from the use of Sandvik Multishift bandsaws has been an increase in production yield. Because the kerf in bandsaws is much narrower - about 2.6mm compared to 4.6mm in circular saws - the yield of sawn timber from logs has been increased by approximately 8%.

Ongoing monitoring of production has revealed that increased productivity is being achieved. Sawing time has been increased so that the interval between blade changes and regrinding is 30-40 hours or 4-5 shifts on summer schedules and 3-4 shifts on winter schedules. Each blade cuts about 10,000 logs and blocks with one set-up. Sawing accuracy and surface finish are good throughout.

The blade costs including maintenance are estimated at about 0.20% of total production costs compared with Sandvik's experience of normal industry levels of about 1%.

The benefit of Sandvik Multishift's ability to saw frozen logs has been proven in another application. Sandvik reports that a sawmill using Multishift was able to continue sawing even at temperatures of minus 42 degrees Centigrade, when surrounding sawmills had to halt production with the consequent cost implications of unused capacity.
