ISO 14001 APPROVAL
The announcement follows the recent award of ISO 14001 approval by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance to Sandvik Steel's production unit, Sandvik P&P located near Bielefeld in Germany. At the same time, Sandvik P&P became registered to the EU's Environmental Management System standard, designated EMAS (Regulation No 1836/93). Sandvik Steel's commitment to further developing its environmental management systems is such that the company is working towards certification to ISO 14001 for its 20 production units worldwide by 2003. These first two production units to qualify mean that Sandvik Steel is among the first steel companies in Europe to gain approvals. Says Per Abenius, head of Sandvik's Environmental Department in Sweden, 'ISO 14001 is a standard which can be integrated with other management and control systems, such as ISO 9001, to achieve both environmental and economic goals. Having clear environmental policies and objectives means that our environmental management systems can lead to cost savings. For example, we now have effective heat conservation programmes in place and more efficient handling of waste.' 'Being approved to ISO 14001 also means that we have achieved a standard which is recognised by customers anywhere in the world. It is likely that in future customers will insist that their supplies are environmentally certified.' Sandvik's ISO 14001 approval is for three years after which a new audit will be required for further certification. During this period the company will undertake internal audits in order to keep systems up to date. Environmental targets will be re-evaluated and reset each year and environmental objectives reviewed continuously.
