News by Supplier: Ohio State University

Ohio State's roots go back to 1870, when the Ohio General Assembly established the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The new college was made possible through the provisions of the Land-Grant Act, signed by President Lincoln on July 2, 1862. This legislation revolutionised the US nation's approach to higher education, bringing a college degree within reach of all high school graduates.

The 20-10 Plan is designed to move Ohio State into the top-tier of America's public research universities by the year 2010, with 10 programs ranked in the top 10 in their respective disciplines and 20 programs ranked in the top 20.

Environmentally safer catalyst proves more active in hydrogen production
16 March 2005 - Ohio State University
Ohio State University engineers have developed a chemical catalyst that increases hydrogen production without using a toxic metal common to other catalysts.
'Bumpy' glass could lead to self-cleaning windows, slick micromachines
18 January 2005 - Ohio State University
Scanning electron micrograph image of the surface of a lotus leaf. Ohio State University engineers are using the bumpy leaf as a model for slick, water-repellent surfaces.
'Brick wall' helps explain how corrosion spreads through alloy
15 November 2004 - Ohio State University
Ohio State University researchers have developed a statistical model of the deterioration and simulated it on computer, using what may seem like an unlikely analogy - a cracking brick wall – and are finding new insights into how microscopic corrosion attacks an aluminium alloy commonly used in aircraft.
Glass semiconductor softens with low-power laser, then re-hardens
07 September 2004 - Ohio State University
Scientists at Ohio State University have found that a special type of glass that is finding use in the electronics industry softens when exposed to very low-level laser light, and hardens back into its original condition when the light is switched off.
Paint absorbs corrosion-causing chemicals
23 August 2004 - Ohio State University
Engineers at Ohio State University have incorporated clay and other chemicals into a paint that keeps metal from corroding -- and reveals when an airplane, boat, or bridge needs to be repainted. Though the paint is still under development, early tests have shown that it prevents corrosion just as well as commercial paints that are less environmentally friendly.
Medical implants work better when you rough them up, study finds
14 June 2004 - Ohio State University
Medical implants – from catheters that deliver long-term life support to joint replacements – may work better when their surfaces are on the rough side, new research suggests.
50-year-old magnetic mystery solved; quantum structure obeys classical physics
06 January 2004 - Ohio State University
Ohio State University physicists and their colleagues have demonstrated for the first time a type of magnetic behaviour that was predicted to exist more than 50 years ago.
New look at layered material lends insight to silicon
01 December 2003 - Ohio State University
Engineers at Ohio State University and their colleagues have taken an unprecedented look at the interface between layers of silicon and other materials in electronic devices.
Engineers take new look at strength of industrial glass fibre
25 February 2003 - Ohio State University
An Ohio State University engineer and his colleagues have discovered something new about a 50-year-old type of fibreglass: it may be more than one and a half times stronger than previously thought.
