EPSRC is the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing more than £800 million a year in a broad range of subjects – from mathematics to materials science, and from information technology to structural engineering.

Functional Materials get UK research financial boost
28 December, 2014
Ten new research projects that will advance UK manufacturing capability, develop new and exciting functional materials, and accelerate the translation of the science of functional materials through to application were announced today by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), valued in total at £20 million.
Thorium to replace uranium for improved nuclear design?
21 October, 2014
An international project is developing a radical new type of nuclear power station that is safer, more cost-effective, compact, quicker and less disruptive to build than any previously constructed. Specifically, it is exploring whether the element thorium could help to meet the new design’s fuel needs. As well as being three to four times more abundant than uranium, thorium could potentially produce electricity more fuel efficiently and therefore more cheaply.
Safer and more sustainable materials for manufacturing
14 February, 2014
Manufacturing industries rely on a supply of raw materials; increasingly these are rare, expensive, difficult to source, and subject to regulation. A £10.3 million grant, awarded to researchers today by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will be used to find safer, more sustainable alternatives. The energy, automotive, aerospace, and construction industries, amongst others, will benefit from this investment.
UK Minister for Universities and Science announces £85 million research capital fund
03 April, 2013
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is to invite capital bids against an £85 million fund to increase the strength and productivity of the research base within three technologies: * Advanced Materials (£30 million) * Grid-scale Energy Storage (£30 million) * Robotics & Autonomous Systems (£25 million)
Hexagonal alloys feature in key UK Government-sponsored Frontier Engineering funding
18 March, 2013
New innovative engineering projects and an international partnership between the UK and US will bring leading engineers and scientists together to address some of the major engineering challenges facing the world.
Materials Substitution for Safety, Security and Sustainability: expression of interest for UK research proposals
15 March, 2013
EPSRC is inviting Expressions of Interest to bid into the call for research proposals in Materials Substitution for Safety, Security and Sustainability. The aim of the call is to support research that addresses the manufacturing challenges associated with novel replacements for materials that are scarce, difficult to source, expensive or deleterious to health and the environment.
Grants to help advance sustainability and combat reliance on fossil resource
23 January, 2013
Finding alternative ways of supplying chemicals for fuels and industrial use is one of the key challenges facing the industrial biotechnology industry today. Dwindling supplies and growing demand for fossil based resources, plus geopolitical uncertainty and the threat of climate change provide a vivid backdrop.
