The new device, called a CryoPen , freezes localized sections of human tissue, thereby destroying them while keeping the tissue's fiber structure.

Ertalyte TX rod for machining high-wear-resistant parts is an unreinforced semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyester that has a solid lubricant filler. The material has excellent performance in both high-pressure and high-velocity conditions, and is ideally suited for applications involving soft metal and plastic mating surfaces.

High-performance ethylene-chlorotrifluoro-ethylene sheet is now available from Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products. Compared to other fluoropolymer materials, Symalit ECTFE sheet offers a unique balance of high purity, mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance. The new material can be machined easily, thermoformed, and is melt-weldable. It is manufactured from the well-known Halar resin formulation.

Industria Proeza, Mexico, a major manufacturer of intermediates used by textile manufacturers, has significantly improved its manufacturing efficiency by replacing PTFE bushings on its 3,500-liter chemical reactors with bushings made of Ketron PEEK. Compared to PTFE bushings, which were wearing out in less than two months of operation, bushings made of Ketron PEEK (polyetheretherketone) are lasting over four times longer.

The latest refinement in the Strasbaugh precision wafer surfacing equipment reduces metal particle contamination. For its CMP Planarizers, including models 6EG, 6EC and 6DS-SP, Strasbaugh replaced the titanium top plate in the wafer carrier assembly with a top plate made of a high-performance plastic, Techtron polyphenylene sulfide.

A new water filtration system, the largest of its type, has been introduced by ONDEO Degremont, Paris, France. The Ultrazur 450 can process over 10,000 cubic meters (2.6 million gal.) of water per day. Its central filtration module is 1,350 mm (4.43 ft) high and 450 mm (17.7 in.) in diameter.

Since non-metallic test heads are used to hold the IC devices, their rapid movement into and out of logic testers can create the potential for electrostatic discharge.
