When PlŠsticos y Materias Primas (PyMPSA), a Mexican manufacturer of medical devices and components, wanted to develop a new catheter for epidural anesthesia, it specified a biocompatible nylon material that was radiopaque so it could be readily observed during x-ray imaging to ensure proper placement. The first efforts were disappointingm but custom compounder RTP developed a custom material for the application.

Telene SAS has recently developed a new family of high-performance DCPD based formulations. The Telene 1800 series consists of two component-systems, using the same monomers as more traditional, RIM-orientated Telene grades but based on a different catalyst which overcomes the sensitivity to oxygen or water.

RTP has licensed manufacturing rights from ExxonMobil Chemical for their patented Santoprene TP(thermoplastic vulcanizate) nylon-bondable thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) product line. RTP has begun producing the products using the same Santoprene TPV technology to provide a seamless supply transition and will also develop new markets and applications.

At the Photonics West conference, Dow Corning and IBM scientists have unveiled a new type of silicone-based polymer to transmit light instead of electrical signals within supercomputers and data centres. It offers better physical properties, including robustness and flexibility, making it ideal for applications in Big Data and for the development of future computers capable of performing a billion billion computations per second.
High temperature polyamide useful in lead-free soldering environments

Soldering without lead results in a higher melt temperature of the solder pastes, which in turn increases the processing temperature for soldering electronic assemblies. Stanyl ForTii can perform in up to 260C for lead-free reflow soldering of surface mount processes. The big issue of course is warpage and finding a material able to cope with the increased heat and maintain its overall stiffness and durability.

Exilica has developed and patented a technology which allows long-lasting fragrances to be manufactured into a variety of plastics and other polymer-based materials. The company recently collaborated with Birmingham-based Barkley Plastics and fragrance firm Seven Scent to create a scented floor tile, and has launched a trial run of the product in toilets on Coventry University’s campus.
