Boeing is testing 3D printed trim tool

Boeing is testing a 3-D-printed trim and drill tool in building its 777X passenger jet. The tool, developed by researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) measures (in Imperial units) is 17.5 x 5.5 x 1.5ft and weighs 1650 lb. It was printed in 30 hours using carbon fibre and ABS thermoplastic.
Trumpf to offer selective laser melting for 3D printing of metals

Leading manufacturer of 3D printers, Zortrax, has released a free whitepaper on 3D printing for modern mouldmaking that shows how to cut time and costs in short run productions using RTV moulding (room temperature vulcanization moulding). The preparation of a master pattern is claimed to be 50% to 80% faster when compared to traditional methods.

Luxexcel, a company that 3D prints functional lenses, has announced a EUR7.5 million series B funding. The first closure is done and the second closure will be finalized in 3 months time. The B-round was led by the Flemish investment company PMV, which included the firm’s existing investors, SET Ventures and Munich Venture Partners.

Renishaw is unveiling the machine that it is developing specifically for production manufacturing. Provisionally named EVO Project, it is the first additive manufacturing system designed and engineered in-house at Renishaw. At Euromold 2014, which took taking place between 25 and 28 November in Frankfurt, the Renishaw stand featured an EVO Project machine, as well as an AM250 system and an AM250 fitted with the PlusPac upgrade.

Plastics specialist Igus has developed a new tribo-polymer filament for 3D printers, developed to create structurally robust prototypes or small batch components for test in real-world applications. Suitable for use with any 3D printer that has a heated nozzle, print bed and uses ABS filaments, the material is up to 50 times more resistant to wear and abrasion than products made from conventional 3D printer materials, such as ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and PLA (Polylactic acid)

Students at Morehead State University are building an amateur radio CubeSat with a propulsion system that will raise the apogee of its orbit from 500 km to 1200 km. RAMPART, which stands for RApidprototyped Mems Propulsion And Radiation Test CUBEflow SATellite, plans to launch on a Minotaur from Vandenburgh in June 2013. The innovative use of additive manufacturing with Windform XT (a laser sintering material introduced in 2004) enabled the desgners to modify, change, and add experiments without concern for having to develop tooling or modify an existing cube structure.

A prototype of a cutting-edge 'three-dimensional printer', a Rapid Prototyping (RP) device, has been successfully developed by a group at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Many core techniques have been integrated to build this three-dimensional printer. These core techniques include nanoscale powder manufacturing technology, precision positioning and process control, powder compounding, specialilsed bonding and cohesion techniques, improved ink injection and driving technology, and an integrated system of three-dimensional inject printing. The technique has also been transferred to a domestic company possessing core technique in printer manufacture.
