Low flammability structural composites and adhesives for aerospace interiors

The use of composite materials on aircraft interiors is emerging from the shadow of composite airframe applications. With fuel prices currently accounting for over a third of operating costs, it is now widely recognised that interior composites can deliver significant cost savings in this area. Composites currently account for just 20 to 25% of the total interior weight of an aircraft and there is huge potential for this to increase to as much as 30-40% within the next ten years.
 
Easy to process polyimide resin for high temperature applications

Nexam Chemical introduces Neximid MHT-R, a new easy to process resin for use in high temperature applications, with Tg above 400C. The resin is primarily intended for use in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) of high temperature composite parts for the aerospace industry. Other areas, such as machine manufacturing industry and different transport sectors will also benefit from this material where metal replacement of parts exposed for high temperatures are possible.

Foamed In-Situ Thermoformable Sandwich (FITS) panels cut weight and cost for aircraft and high-speed train interiors

At JEC Europe 2014 in Paris, SMTC introduced Dynatech, a thermoplastic sandwich panel system, suitable for mass-production, principally targeting aircraft, although also high-speed train interiors. These applications require light weight in combination with damage tolerance and specified fire, smoke and toxicity (FST). It also offers better thermic and acoustic isolation compared to traditional honeycombs based on thermoset (mainly phenolic) panels. Its heat resistance properties make this system a highly desirable and long-lasting material.
 
Parisian composites show reports positive outcomes in 2014

A record number of exhibitors (over 1200) and visitors (over 32,000) from 88 countries attended JEC Europe. The two floors levels of Paris Porte de Versailles pavilion 7 are now full, and JEC Group is reportedly considering the addition of a 3rd floor for 2015.

The Aachen Center for Integrative Lightweight Production (AZL) of RWTH Aachen University has announced its 33 founding partners. This follows the framework of the so-called Excellence Initiative by the German Government, with new clusters established on the campus of the University of RWTH in Aachen over the next 10 years.
