High speed direct detection camera aids observation of facet development in nanocube growth |
|
|
Microscopy
: 20 September, 2014 |
For nearly 150 years Gibbs theory has been used extensively in predicting the equilibrium shape during crystal growth. However, recent research on platinum (Pt) nanocrystal growth has proven that this classical crystal growth theory breaks down at the nanoscale. Now, a research group led by Dr Haimei Zheng, a staff scientist at US Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (Materials Science Division), has used a Gatan K2 IS high speed direct detection camera to reveal the growth process of Pt nanocubes from molecular precursors in a liquid environment in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). |

Materials Characterisation and Testing Equipment
: 27 August, 2013 |
Every home, office and factory already has numerous pumps, meters and flow valves as they are used in applications ranging from dishwashers to artificial hearts, many of them use materials that are excellent at keeping liquids out, but then perform poorly simply because they provide a poor barrier to vapours and gasses. EVOH, PVOH, cellulose and many other materials fall into this category. Worse still, manufacturing processes such as thermoforming can degrade performance to a quarter of its original value. |
