Compostable laminate packs tackle changing waste regulations |
: 03 April, 2013 |
There is no more emotive issue in the packaging industry than recyclability and identifying ways to reduce the 40% of waste going to landfill every year. For many, home composting is a preferred end-of-life option. But until now, few packaging solutions could provide the robustness of performance with this capability. Paper manufacturer Sappi Fine Paper Europe and flexible substrate specialist Innovia Films, have combined the technical packaging performance properties of their Algro Nature and NatureFlex, respectively, to develop a home compostable laminate. Cellulose-based and manufactured from renewable sources, Algro Nature and NatureFlex will help packaging producers meet the EU Packaging Directive becoming effective next year. The intent of the Directive is to ensure that packaging is suitable for recycling, energy recovery or composting in-home or through industrial processes. |
