A Safer Alternative for Paint Stripping

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 24 February, 2004  (Company News)
Under a newly launched partnership between INVISTA
Clearly marked with the DBE® logo, the Eco Solutions range of safe and effective coatings removal products, from paint strippers and brush cleaners to nail polish removers, are available in major DIY stores such as B&Q, FOCUS, John Lewis Partnership and many independent hardware stores.

Apart from avoiding the risks that are associated with hazardous solvents, paint stripping products containing DBE® dibasic esters from INVISTA™ (formerly DuPont Textiles & Interiors), can strip several coats in one application without damaging the underlying surface – regardless of whether on plaster, stone, steel or wood. Furthermore, because of the non-hazardous nature of paint strippers containing DBE®, safe disposal of the residue is also much easier.

The first Eco Solutions range of coatings removal products was launched in 1999 as a safer alternative to the many commercial paint stripping and coatings removal products, which are either solvent or caustic based. In most cases, the main ingredient of these products is dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride. This material gives off potentially hazardous fumes and can cause irritations when it comes into contact with the skin, and is listed as a class III carcinogen in the European Union.

Further environmental credentials of Eco Solutions products include the Millennium Products Award 2000 for innovation and creativity, sponsored by the UK Government and Design Council. Their products carry the CE mark for safety for use as a children's toy, for marketing into the education market, and have a minimal VOC content of 0.000004% compared to dichloromethane based products of, in some cases, over 90% VOC content.
