ABB analyzer systems keep power plants running

ABB Automation Technologies : 21 March, 2007  (Company News)

According to the U.S. Electric Power Research Institute, half of the forced outages in power plants are caused by contaminated water corroding the boiler. ABB has the answer to this problem.

With effective control of the water-steam chemistry, “plant personnel can eliminate the major causes of reduced availability and high maintenance costs while improving plant heat rate and profitability,” says a report by EPRI, which is an independent, non-profit center for energy and environmental research whose members represent 90 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.

“In contrast, poor water-steam purity can promote corrosion damage and deposition on major components, leading to boiler tube and turbine blade/disc failures, flow-accelerated corrosion in feedwater piping, and other problems. Unit efficiency suffers as well.”

As the world’s leading supplier of analyzer products, systems and solutions for the power, water and process industries, ABB is enabling utilities and independent power producers all over the world to monitor and maintain the purity of their process water and steam, thereby helping to prevent the scenario outlined by EPRI.

ABB offers complete packaged analyzer solutions for the continuous measurement of critical parameters like pH and conductivity, dissolved oxygen, sodium, silica and hydrazine, all of which are vital to peak efficiency in the steam-raising process.

ABB is the only supplier to offer integrated systems that consist entirely of its own products. They come in easy-to-operate, easy-to-maintain packages that are pre-tested, meet all relevant standards, and are delivered, ready for operation, in “plug-and-play” cabins. Connection to samples, drains, power supply and signal outputs is all that is required.

ABB has been building pre-assembled analyzer systems for almost 30 years and has delivered more than 250 installations to sites in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
