ABB is key partner in major North Sea oil and gas projects

ABB Automation Technologies : 12 March, 2007  (Company News)
ABB is a key supplier to some of the world's biggest and most technologically advanced oil and gas projects which were in the spotlight at this year's Offshore Northern Seas conference and exhibition.
Among them are developments by Norsk Hydro, Shell, Statoil and BP for which ABB is providing automation, electrification and telecommunications solutions.

Ormen Lange, the world's longest underwater export pipeline, was the centerpiece of Norsk Hydro's stand at Europe's biggest oil and gas industry conference, held in Stavanger, Norway. ABB is also a partner in the Snohvit project highlighted by Statoil, which is Europe's first liquefied natural gas facility.

Projects using a unique ABB technology, HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) Light, were being presented by Statoil and BP.

Four major projects
For the giant Ormen Lange project, ABB is supplying a complete and fully integrated automation, electrification and telecommunications solution that includes process control, safety, power distribution, power management and control, power generation, medium voltage motors and large drives, telecommunications and advanced lifecycle simulator.

For the Snohvit gas field and Hammerfest gas liquefaction plant, the first LNG facility in Europe, a complete and fully integrated ABB automation, safety and electrification system will enable Statoil to operate and monitor the underwater installation from one onshore location and achieve an energy efficiency level unmatched by any other LNG facility worldwide.

ABB is providing field instrumentation and analytics, underwater and process automation, safety, power distribution and power management, power generation, simulators, motors and large drive systems, all seamlessly integrated.

At Statoil's Troll A field, an ABB solution consisting of two unique ABB technologies, HVDC Light and Very High Voltage Motors, has enabled Statoil to increase capacity by 25 million cubic meters of natural gas a year and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 230,000 tons.

The groundbreaking installation has been so successful that BP has recently placed an order for an HVDC Light power-from-shore solution that will significantly reduce operating and maintenance costs at its flagship Valhall platform complex.

New products with unique benchmark benefits
Three new ABB products that offer significant benefits to the oil and gas industry also attracted attention at the exhibition. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of automation, safety, electrification and telecommunications solutions for the oil and gas industry.

The ACS800 liquid-cooled drive, the world’s most compact high-power drive for oil and gas and marine application ACS800 liquid-cooled drives for high-power oil and gas and marine applications are the smallest on the market, about two-thirds the size of its nearest competitor, which is a key factor for platforms and marine vessels where space efficiency is critical. The drives are equipped with three-phase inverter modules, as opposed to the single phase of competing drives, and can operate at partial load if one module is not operating, thereby achieving an unrivalled level of availability and reliability.

MNS IS cabinet is a motor-control center for integrated systems. Its unique features include segregated control and power sections, which enable speedy and safe access by maintenance engineers; and an exceptionally accurate current measuring sensor which provides real-time data on current, voltage, temperature and other key parameters.

Extended Operator Workplace for System 800xA, A key attraction at the ABB stand is the pioneering Extended Operator Workplace for ABB’s System 800xA automation platform. EOW provides operators with a fully interactive overview of the entire process, synchronizes all process data (including closed-circuit television) into one interface in real time, and enables users to configure the workplace to their exact needs. EOW is installed at oil and gas installations all over the world, including Troll A, Snohvit/Hammerfest, Ormen Lange and Valhall.
