BASF-YPC Co Ltd has produced its first chemical product - methyl acrylate. The successful start-up of its methyl acrylate plant on 22 December 2004 marks the completion of the integrated petrochemical site in Nanjing, China, which was scheduled for the end of 2004.
“This was the ambitious goal set by BASF and SINOPEC when they established their joint venture in 2000. Our current aim is to start up all 10 plants safely by mid-2005”, stated Dr Bernd Blumenberg, President of BASF-YPC Co Ltd.
BASF-YPC Co Ltd, a 50-50 joint venture between BASF and SINOPEC, is an integral part of BASF's strategy in the Asia/Pacific region. By 2010, BASF aims to generate 20% of its sales and earnings in its chemical activities in Asia Pacific, with 70% coming from local production.
In addition to methyl acrylate, BASF-YPC plans to produce other acrylic esters and glacial acrylic acid.
Acrylic acid and acrylic esters are highly versatile monomers that are used in many industrial applications. Methyl acrylate is mainly used as a co-monomer in the manufacture of acrylic fibres. Acrylic esters are also widely used in the manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesives, packaging tapes, construction chemicals, surface coatings as well as exterior architectural latex coatings and paints. Acrylic acid is the most important precursor in the production of super absorbent polymers, the active component of baby diapers and other hygienic products.
BASF-YPC was established at the end of 2000. The joint venture will build and operate a steam cracker (600 000 tonnes ethylene per year) and nine downstream plants on its 220-hectare site on the Yangtze River. The plants are expected to begin commercial operations in mid-2005. BASF-YPC will produce about 1.7 million tonnes of high quality chemicals and polymers per year for the rapidly growing Chinese market place.
The capacity of the plants at BASF-YPC are:
*steam-cracker (ethylene) 600 000 mt/y;
*ethylene glycols (EG) 300 000 mt/y;
*low-density polyethylene (LDPE) 400 000 mt/y;
*acrylic acid (AA) 160 000 mt/y;
*acrylic esters (AE) 215 000 mt/y;
*C4-oxo-alcohols 250 000 mt/y;
*formic acid 50 000 mt/y;
*propionic acid 30 000 mt/y;
*methyl amines (MA) 30 000 mt/y; and
*dimethyl formamide (DMF) 40,000 mt/y.
