Borealis to showcase new power cable solutions

Borealis, the world's leading provider of polyolefin compounds for the Wire & Cable industry, is participating at the Wire Russia 2005 International Trade Fair, June 21-24 in Moscow (Borealis stand, 4B08/4C07, Pavilion 7 in the Krasnaya Presnya Exhibition Centre).
Its presence reflects the company's commitment to support the development of the Russian Energy and Communication cable infrastructure. Borealis' presentation at Wire Russia 2005 will focus on technically advanced Wire and Cable solutions that offer greater productivity and longer service life.

Customer-oriented solutions

As a result of its substantial investment in Research and Development, Borealis continues to develop solutions tailored to customers' specific insulation requirements.

Solutions that will be featured on the Borealis stand include SuperCOPO cross linked polyethylene copolymer insulation, providing high wet-ageing performance for Medium Voltage cables, Supercure XLPE, which brings improved throughput for High Voltage cables, Visico/Ambicat, a unique XLPE copolymer and catalyst system for Low Voltage, moisture cure cables and Borealis PP1112 compound for improved performance fibre optic cables.

SuperCOPO LH4201 and LE4205 high performance materials deliver consistently high wet-ageing performance according to CENELEC and VDE test protocols. These products have, over the last 20 years been shown to be effective for cables with a bonded insulation shield construction. For end-users, utilities and government entities, the excellent service life of cable insulated with SuperCOPO XLPE means that infrastructures will last longer and provide power with greater efficiency and most importantly lower total cost of ownership. This solution has been used with proven success in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and other European countries.

Supercure LS4201 cable insulation addresses the industry's need for further improvements, both in operating efficiency and output rate. It is engineered to enhance run length due to its lower propensity for scorch, to reduce degassing time, and to increase extrusion speed. At moderate wall thickness (10-14mm), the total production time can be reduced by as much as 20%.

The Visico/Ambicat copolymer and catalyst system developed for low voltage insulation simplifies and reduces the cost of cable production.

Visico is a unique scorch-retardant, moisture curable, ethylene-vinyl silane copolymer and Ambicat is a tin-free catalyst masterbatch that enables Visico cross-linking at ambient temperature.

The key advantage offered by Visico/Ambicat is that it requires no separate curing operation, and cross-linking takes place in a fraction of the time required by other materials.

The scorch retardant additive in Visico allows long production runs without pre-cross-linking occurring in the extruder. Due to the fact that the material exhibits no die drool, continuous extrusion for two to four weeks is possible with short line stops to allow tooling change, without the need to clean the extruder.

Borealis PP1112 compound, a heterophasic polypropylene solution for fibre optic cable products, provides a competitive alternative to the more expensive polybutadiene-terephthalate, widely used in this market sector. The product is designed to reduce material costs and improve performance. Using the same extruder screw and achieving the same production speed as PBT, PP1112 offers the producer a loose tube material with a significant cost saving. PP1112 satisfies key dimensional stability criteria for fibre optic cables and delivers improved hydrolytic stability performance when compared with PBT.
