The Chinese Vice-Premier, Zeng Peiyan, visited Bayer AG on Friday, November 26, while on a visit to Germany. He was accompanied by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Germany, Ma Canrong, and a high-ranking delegation. |

Werner Wenning, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer AG, Board member Udo Oels, and Dr. Hagen Noerenberg, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer MaterialScience AG, welcomed the guests on board a ship in Cuxhaven to take them to the Bayer site at Brunsbüttel. There, the delegation was welcomed by the Economics Minister of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Dr. Bernd Rohwer, and the manager of Bayer's Brunsbüttel site, Dr. Roland Stegmüller.
Wenning pointed out that China was the country with the fastest-growing economy in the world and with the most direct foreign investment. At the same time, China was facing new challenges such as ensuring energy supplies, combating disease and safeguarding the quality of agricultural products. 'I am confident that, with Bayer's expertise in the fields of high-tech materials, health care and nutrition, plus its creative potential as an inventor company, we can make a significant contribution to mastering these tasks,' said the Bayer Board Chairman.
Referring to a major project being realized by Bayer MaterialScience in Caojing near Shanghai, Wenning said: 'On behalf of everyone involved, I would like to thank you and the Chinese Government most warmly for the enormous support we had in setting up this project. We hope we can count on this support in the future.'
At its Caojing site, Bayer is building large-scale facilities for the production of coating raw materials, high-performance plastics and polyurethane raw materials for rigid and flexible foams. Plants for the production of coating raw materials are already on stream, and the foundations for a Makrolon® polycarbonate production facility were laid in November last year. Total investments amounting to US$ 1.8 billion have been earmarked for the overall project. Other projects worth in the region of US$ 800 million that are slated for future implementation are currently at the planning stage. Additionally, there are plans to invest US$ 500 million in LANXESS projects.
'China is a growth market with very good prospects,' said Udo Oels, the member of the Bayer Board of Management who is responsible for the Asia Region. 'This is why we will be extending our heavy commitment there also to our subgroups Bayer HealthCare and Bayer CropScience over the next few years.'
Bayer currently employs around 2,700 people in China, and posted sales of some EUR 1.1 billion there in 2003. Bayer's connections with China date back to the year 1882, when Bayer first marketed dyes on the Chinese market.
During the trip to Brunsbüttel, the guests were given an insight into the different activities of the Bayer subgroups in a small exhibition. In Brunsbüttel, they visited the MDI facility for the production of polyurethane foams. |
