Building on the success of its Xantar C product range, DSM Engineering Plastics has now introduced a range of new chlorine and bromine free FR Xantar C polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) flame-retardant formulations.
FR Xantar C PC/ABS benefits from a low-volatility flame retardant for minimum outgassing, juicing and in-process pollution and exhibits a 10-15C higher Vicat softening temperature than competing formulations.
FR Xantar C formulations meet UL94 V-0 @ 1,5mm specifications without using chlorine or bromine containing flame retardant additives.
The whole range of products is therefore fully compliant with ECO-labels such as Blue Angel or White Swan and is not affected by any restrictions mentioned in the recent EC guidelines on plastic waste treatment (WEEE 2002/96/EC) or on hazardous substances (RoHS 2002/95/EC and 2003/11/EC).
The new family, ideal for environmentally aware (‘green’) applications, includes grades for injection moulding (with a conventional and a high-flow version) and extrusion.
FR Xantar C shares the base Xantar C resin’s higher flow/impact behaviour and better stability when compared to competitive resins.
Applications include banking equipment; E and E housings; mobile phone housings; building and construction; transportation applications and electrical components and connectors.
The higher flow/impact behaviour of FR Xantar C results in greater design freedom, easier filling of complex parts, lower processing temperatures and shorter cycle times, compared to competing grades.
The ‘cleaner’ formulation - using high-purity polymers - results in lower mould deposits, reduced mould cleaning, and longer runs of uninterrupted moulding, as well as improved, smoother part surface and appearance, compared to other grades.
Typical mechanical properties of FR Xantar C, depending on grade, include an Izod notched impact strength >35kJ/m2, a tensile strength at yield of 60 N/mm2; a flexural modulus of 2700 to 2800 N/mm2 and a Vicat softening temperature of 104º-120ºC.
As with all Xantar grades, FR Xantar C takes a wide range of colourants with lot-to-lot consistency of both neat and coloured resins, and a broad range of modifiers and reinforcing additives.
