Dawson Shanahan enhances existing capabilities with investment in high-precision hard turning technology

Dawson Shanahan, a leading worldwide supplier of cold formed and machined components, is investing in new state of the art hard turning technology at its factory in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, thus becoming one of the few companies with ultra high precision hard turning facilities in the UK. The new larger capacity machines form part of the company
In particular, Dawson Shanahan will be investing in two new highly specialised turning machines, the K90 and K250 custom built by the Swiss company Kummer Frères SA. These innovative machines produce such a high quality result, with surface finish precision typically being within 2 microns and tolerances of 10 microns, while removing minimal stock, that the need for grinding as a finishing process is eliminated. Using the new Kummer equipment, Dawson Shanahan can achieve this degree of superior surface finish extremely quickly, enabling them to cut costs and lead times considerably, particularly when manufacturing small hardened component parts of up to 30mm in size, those produced in high volumes and those with complex profiles, faces and bores.

Furthermore, the new Kummer hard turning machines are fully automated and easily turn components with a hardness of between 58 and 62 HRC, improving Dawson Shanahan’s capability to customers still further. They use a standard single point cutting tool to turn complex contours, eliminating the need for expensive form wheels, and multiple operations can be performed in one clamping set up meaning less part handling and easy configuration changes, which ultimately translate to significantly reduced tool costs, cycle times and, most importantly, component cost. In addition, the process of hard turning is typically a dry and environmentally friendly one as there is no need to dispose of grinding sludge.

Dawson Shanahan’s Managing Director, Les Reeves, explained, “We already have extensive cold forming and machining facilities at our factories in Potters Bar and Welshpool, but our investment in the new hard grinding machines complements our existing capabilities, helping us to meet growing demand from our customers in a variety of markets.”
