Duplex stainless steel gains ground in spring wire applications

Stainless steel for the manufacture of springs has gained considerable ground over, for example, copper and unalloyed steel and even plastic in some cases. Good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, long life, appearance and environmental friendliness in terms of its ability for recycling, have all combined to increase consumption of stainless steel, particularly for small diameter wire.
Stainless steel for the manufacture of springs has gained considerable ground over, for example, copper and unalloyed steel and even plastic in some cases. Good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, long life, appearance and environmental friendliness in terms of its ability for recycling, have all combined to increase consumption of stainless steel, particularly for small diameter wire.

Sandvik Springflex, from Sandvik Materials Technology, is a high performing stainless steel based on Sandvik's duplex grades Sandvik SAF 2205 and its higher strength variant Sandvik SAF 2205SH.

Originally produced as bar and tube for aggressive environments in the oil, gas, chemical and petrochemical industries, in its wire form, Sandvik Springflex provides an excellent design option for spring wire for demanding applications.

Characterized by high mechanical strength, high fatigue resistance, excellent relaxation resistance and superb corrosion resistance, Sandvik Springflex is capable of replacing standard stainless steel grades, such as AISI 316. Recent testing at the Institute of Spring Technology in the UK certified that tested springs withstood exposure to 800 hours of salt spray testing without any evidence of pitting corrosion.

Additionally, Sandvik Springflex's high ductility lends itself to intricate and complex spring designs, whilst the extra high tensile version is ideal for functioning reliably in confined spaces.

Closely specified and controlled chromium and molybdenum contents in Sandvik Springflex distinguishes it from the standard stainless AISI 316 grade, and results in high resistance to corrosion, high tensile and proof strengths. In turn, the high tensile strength increases the relaxation resistance of the material and contributes similarly to its high fatigue strength.

Benefits to producers through using Sandvik Springflex wire include springs with increased stroke length and spring force, less maintenance and longer working life. Because of the duplex structure, Sandvik Springflex is extremely ductile, which combined with the material's inherent strength, enables low weight and complex spring designs.

Final tempering of a finished spring will increase the tensile strength by up to 450 Mpa and increases spring force, relaxation resistance and fatigue strength. It also releases the stresses built into the wire during the spring coiling process.

Another benefit to spring makers is that the tensile strength variation between Sandvik spools/coils within the same production lot is 50 Mpa (7 ksi) maximum. The proof strength in the tempered condition is approx. 90% of the tempered tensile strength. The tensile strength values are guaranteed and are measured directly after production.

Sandvik Springflex spring wire is available in a size range from 0.15mm up to 8.00mm diameter and in either a coated surface finish for 0.40 up to 8.00mm diameter and a bright finish for 0.15 up to 0.80mm diameter.
