DuPont Cosmetic Solutions merges function and aesthetics to set new standards in luxury packaging

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 29 October, 2004  (Company News)
Building on the
“These combined strengths enable us to deliver solutions that satisfy both the design and performance requirements of the global cosmetic and personal care industry,” says Craig Binetti, President, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers.

“Our objective is to turn dreams into reality. DuPont’s extremely broad portfolio of materials, coupled with our unique experience in decorative technologies, gives us an important edge in marrying function and aesthetics,” says Heike Van de Kerkhof, Global Director DuPont Cosmetic Solutions. “This allows designers and brands to create the perfect cream jar, the most beguiling perfume bottle, the most ingenious delivery system.”

“Tell us what you need”
“Just tell us what you need and we’ll come up with an innovative solution,” says Thierry Marin, Global Marketing Manager DuPont Functional Aesthetics. “In addition to providing materials that fulfill mechanical requirements and offer optimum chemical resistance, we respond to the industry’s needs for exciting new visual effects with maximum consumer appeal, as well as for non-breakable, lightweight containers suitable for today’s nomadic lifestyle. We develop a total solution, all the way from material selection to decorating technology and appropriate manufacturing process. We also offer expertise in moulding, prototyping and performance assessment.”

The technological and marketing strengths of the DuPont Cosmetic Solutions initiative, launched at Luxe Pack Monaco 2003, were considerably enhanced with the recent opening of the Functional Aesthetics Laboratory, a fully integrated development unit, at DuPont’s European Technical Centre in Meyrin (Geneva), Switzerland. This facility offers new ideas, as well as a broad range of technical support in painting, plating and powder coating systems through its alliance with DuPont Performance Coatings. Future developments include 3D and sublimation printing, working with leading specialists such as Pacific Colour (France) and Kolorfusion International (United States). A second plating line provides plating capability for DuPont™ Delrin®, DuPont™ Minlon® and DuPont™ Zytel® HTN®.

Additional investments are underway, which will enable DuPont Cosmetic Solutions to expand its design capabilities across an even broader range of polymers, to further develop its research on compatibility issues, provide essential process support and, last but not least, develop a larger pool of novel packaging concepts.

Some specific examples
One striking development example that illustrates how functional and aesthetic qualities can be successfully combined is an integrated perfume collar made of Delrin®. Based on patented technology, this concept offers chemical resistance and ease of assembly, provides mechanical functionality, reduces the number of components, presents wide painting and plating possibilities and is price competitive.

Other examples of innovative cosmetic packaging concepts on view at Luxe Pack Monaco 2004 include the following:
• New Thick Wall Bottle (TWB) technology based on DuPont™ Surlyn®: glass-like depth in appearance, together with improved dimensional stability and tolerance;
• Overmoulding technology: enclosing a glass “bubble” within an outer layer of Surlyn®, combining the chemical inertness of glass with the design flexibility of Surlyn®;
• Metallised Delrin®, based on DuPont’s patented plating technology;
• Powder-coated Delrin®, which allows the creation of unexpected surface effects and textures;
• DuPont™ Shin-E Rynite®, which combines high gloss with improved thermal properties.

Proactive approach
“DuPont Cosmetic Solutions takes a proactive, holistic approach to the cosmetic and personal care market – from conceptual design to choice of materials and decorating systems right through to product launch,” says Ralph Wares, Global Design Team leader, DuPont Cosmetic Solutions . “Our focus is on building a pipeline of new technologies, including security and brand-protection solutions, that enable our customers to innovate for future growth. We work closely with them to develop original concepts without compromising functionality, meeting their needs for differentiation and building brand equity. We always look for new challenges. We live and breathe innovation.”
