ELEMICA connects Bayer MaterialScience with Bertschi

Bayer MaterialScience AG : 20 July, 2004  (Company News)
Bayer MaterialScience AG, one of the world's leading polymer companies, is now electronically linked with the logistics company Bertschi AG via the B2B provider ELEMICA.
ELEMICA was founded by 22 companies from the chemical industry including Bayer AG and is based on an Internet connection which enables a high degree of automation in data exchange for order processing, planning and logistics.

The qualitative advantages of ELEMICA, particularly in the case of logistical processes, lie in its standardized and automated electronic transfer of transport information, a process which is totally independent of the business hours of the logistics partners in question. This connection requires that all parties involved use the ChemXML standard (www.cidx.org). Additional tracking and tracing modules will be available in ELEMICA in the future.

When the Logistics Department of Bayer Polymers Customer Services GmbH & Co. KG (BPCS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer MaterialScience AG, was looking for a supplier for electronic and automated data exchange between Bayer MaterialScience and its logistics partner, ELEMICA was the first choice due to the benefits it was able to offer. Thanks to the short and efficient information paths provided by ELEMICA, BPCS is able to pursue its objective of delivering long-term improvements in the supply chain processes.

With its many years of experience as an IT user and technology leader in bulk logistics, Bayer MaterialScience's logistics service provider Bertschi was able to meet all the requirements needed for a pilot project designed to test ELEMICA's suitability for the demands of the logistics sector.

After successful termination of the test phase, the BPCS Logistics Department and Bertschi came to the joint decision to establish the ELEMICA connection as the method to be used for automatic data exchange.

Now, transport assignments are being transmitted from the BPCS Logistics Department to Bertschi via this connection, with a confirmation subsequently being sent by Bertschi back to the BPCS Logistics Department. This is achieved by reporting the relevant transport status and the corresponding loading and unloading confirmations. All information is generated automatically from the order processing system and can be called up via the Internet at any time by connected companies on the ELEMICA platform.

Spurred on by this success, the BPCS Logistics Department is now planning further ELEMICA projects. According to the Head of the BPCS Logistics Department, Ulrich Holtze, and the Head of the BPCS eBusiness Department, Helmut Hegger, the long-term objective is to link up all logistics partners to ELEMICA, an objective which is reflected in the ELEMICA motto: 'Connect Once - Connect To All'.
