ABB Limited (Group Headquarters) : 10 February, 2003  (Technical Article)
ABB Limited, based in St Neots, Cambridge, was selected to supply the Project's fully integrated control systems, based on its industry experience and the suitability of its product range. So far five fully integrated control and safety systems have been ordered, to provide process control, emergency shutdown and fire and gas protection at the Sangachal Terminal and on the Central Azeri, C&WP, Eastern Azeri, and Western Azeri Platforms. The approximate total value of these systems is $20 million.

In addition ABB will supply the systems for the BTC Head Pump Station at Sangachal and the numerous Pump / Valve Stations along the pipeline route from Baku to the Ceyhan marine terminal. The first systems, for the CA platform and Sangachal Terminal are expected in the summer of this year.

ABB has extensive Oil & Gas experience in the design and supply of control and safety systems and has provided system solutions for blow out prevention, wellhead control, offshore process and safety, pipeline SCADA, marine terminal control, onshore mass storage, petro-chemical and refining. Their products have been successfully utilised across a diverse range of applications across the world. Its product range 'Industrial IT / Advant' was selected on its mixture of state of the art functionality, well-proven technology and flexibility. The open architecture provides connectivity to a wide range of other packages and systems and its highly sophisticated IT engine, 'Operate IT', provides the main engineering and operator interfaces. The total integrated control system will also provide process control, fire and gas, safety shutdown, and data acquisition from a number of third party packages.

Pip Clark, ABB's Azeri Project Director and Nick Laming, Senior Vice President and ABB Project Sponsor have worked closely with Project personnel, including members of the Operations Team. They have spent time at St Neots, helping to develop the Operator Graphics and Logigrams. (The Project has greatly benefited from their input.)

BP's John Sutcliffe is the ICSS Contract Accountable Manager at Sutton with initial responsibility for ABB's commercial and technical delivery for the Azeri, the BTC Head Pump Station, the EOP Integration and the Sangachal Terminal Control Room projects.

ABB are extremely please to be working on this globally strategic project. We are providing personnel to work in the various locations carrying out the design and are presently setting up the Baku facilities via the local General Manager Bernie Woffinden. Our experience of working on the project is that the task can seem large, but the various BP personnel and contracting organisations are now mutually engaged to deliver. As a common supply function on the projects, I would like to think ABB will contribute significantly to the timely completion of the various facilities
