Fluent releases beta version of FlowLab: New educational software provides virtual fluids laboratory

Fluent : 31 August, 2001  (New Product)
Fluent Inc. Lebanon, NH USA, announces the beta release of Fluent/FlowLab. FlowLab is software, which uses the power of flow visualization through CFD to teach basic fluid mechanics principles in the engineering classroom. The beta version is now being deployed by a select group of engineering professors in Europe and North America, who will test it during the fall semester. Some of the institutions that will be testing FlowLab are: Dartmouth College, University of Vermont, University of Maryland, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Delaware, University of Iowa, Iowa State University and Wayne State University.
Fluent Inc. Lebanon, NH USA, the world leader in computational fluid dynamics software, announces the beta release of Fluent/FlowLab. The software is a Windows-based application that runs Fluent's full-featured general purpose CFD software, FLUENT, in the background, with a user-friendly, student-specific graphical user interface on the front end. Students will be able to use FlowLab as a complement to traditional lab exercises.

'The potential for using CFD to enhance teaching is enormous,' notes Richard LaRoche, Fluent's University Program Manager. 'FlowLab reinforces fundamental concepts in fluid flow and heat transfer, at the same time that it adds an element of real-world application and interest. FlowLab is designed to augment physical lab experiments by allowing the students to explore infinite possibilities in a virtual fluids laboratory. It also exposes students to the concepts of CFD analysis and helps them enter the job market with an understanding of how to use CFD analysis,' adds LaRoche.

An Easy-To-Use Template-Driven Interface
FlowLab presents students with an easy-to-use interface that is based on 'parameterized problem templates.' Using these pre-defined examples, students explore the complete CFD process and gain an understanding of the fluid mechanic concepts associated with each exercise. This parametric approach facilitates 'what if' studies and exploration of real life fluid mechanics, without the typical learning curve associated with CFD software.

Building A Library Of Templates
FlowLab will grow with the students as their knowledge base expands. Professors, lecturers and advanced students will be able to define their own parameterized problem templates, using tools that come with the software. These new templates will be stored and accessed through a special web site, allowing fellow students and colleagues to share in their knowledge base. During this beta release period Fluent will be working with academic advisors to refine and augment the library of templates.

Pricing and Availability
FlowLab is currently available from Fluent Inc. Pricing starts at $1500/year for 10 concurrent users. Please visit the FlowLab web site at http://flowlab.fluent.com to obtain additional information.
