GT develops unique composite molding technique for structural wing components

Greene, Tweed has developed an innovative manufacturing process for compression molding of thermoplastic composites. This inventive technique requires less time, translating into cost-savings for the customer.
Greene, Tweed has developed an innovative manufacturing process for compression molding of thermoplastic composites. This inventive technique requires less time, translating into cost-savings for the customer.

Developed during the design of a wing-rib assembly, this unique composite molding technique eliminates the potential issues of reforming or remolding the thermoplastic composite. The simplified process also presents the possibility to remove traditional fastening systems for wing skin to wing rib, making the component more lightweight and the assembly method less complex. The initial component designed via this process weighed 40 percent less than the metal product it was replacing. Additionally, the component provides excellent fatigue resistance essential for internal components.

This new technique not only improves the molding process but offers the reliability and mechanical strengths necessary for true metal replacement.
