Honeywell develops two-stage centrifugal compressor for small heavy fuel Helicopter engine

Honeywell announced today that it has successfully developed and demonstrated a two-stage centrifugal compressor for its Small Heavy Fuel Engine.
Honeywell announced today that it has successfully developed and demonstrated a two-stage centrifugal compressor for its Small Heavy Fuel Engine.

The two stage compressor for the SHFE will deliver lower engine fuel consumption across a broad operating range, increased engine surge margin, better engine hot and high performance and increased resistance to foreign object damage.

'The SHFE Compressor Technology team has developed a variety of cutting edge technologies, in conjunction with the U.S. Army, to improve engine performance while balancing operating costs,' said Ron J. Rich, Director of Advanced Technology for Honeywell. 'The technology development focus has been the advancement of compressor technology which is scalable to a variety of engine power classes. The compressor will deliver reduced fuel consumption levels while increasing power-to-weight ratio and still achieving challenging cost and reliability goals.'

Honeywell is applying this compressor technology to the new HTS900 turboshaft engine, which has been selected by Bell Helicopter, to power the 407X helicopter. The Bell Helicopter 407X was chosen by the U.S. Army to fill the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter mission requirements.

SHFE is part of the Versatile Affordable Advanced Turbine Engines program, a joint Department of Defense, National Aeronautical Space Administration, Department of Energy and industry alliance. Its goal is to develop, demonstrate and transition advanced multi-use, turbine-engine technologies that provide a revolutionary improvement in affordability to a broad range of current and future military propulsion and power needs.
