JP Gaultier's FRAGILE: Femininity staged - on Delrin

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 01 March, 2001  (New Product)
Parisian style icon Jean Paul Gaultier's newest fragrance, FRAGILE, comes in a highly innovative glass dome bottle, containing a figurine of an elegant woman wearing a black, sheath dress and standing on a podium. The world-famous designer describes the bottle as 'Femininity staged'; the Haute Couture 'stage' in question is made of DuPont Delrin acetal resin, selected for its deep black colour, smooth, shiny surface finish and scratch resistance, as well as its chemical resistance, rigidity and other mechanical properties.

Yann LeCaer is managing director of Niob, located in Guidel (France), the company that produced the 'stage' of the FRAGILE 25 ml bottle for Beauté Prestige International, which manufacturers and distributes FRAGILE. He says: BPI wanted a polymer that was shiny, deep black and scratch resistant for the podium; Delrin fulfilled these conditions perfectly. Importantly, DuPont's acetal resin is well known for resisting the chemicals contained in perfumes. As the moulder and assembler of the glass dome construction, we were also reassured by the mechanical properties of Delrin, particularly its dimensional stability and rigidity. Finally, the polymer is also well-suited to ultrasonic moulding, which is the method we use to produce this highly complex 'podium'.

'We injection-mould the podium and a surrounding ring in Delrin. The principal production challenge was to ensure that this complex container is water-tight. The glass dome is situated between the two parts of acetal resin and an elastomer seal. After assembling the four pieces, we solder them together using ultrasonic welding on six points. Each bottle undergoes individual quality control to assure that there is no leakage. The excellent rigidity of Delrin and its ability to be ultra-sonically welded meant that we could meet our customer's tough aesthetic and anti-leakage specifications with ease.'

Delrin has been used for several years in valve and spray applications within perfume bottles because of its excellent chemical resistance to perfumes, mechanical properties and compatibility with foodstuffs, notably in Shiseido perfume which is also by Jean Paul Gaultier. However, this is the first time that DuPont's acetal resin has been selected for a visible part in a perfume container based partly on the merits of its aesthetic properties. The fact that it plays a significant aesthetic role in the 'coup de theatre' that is the Jean Paul Gaultier FRAGILE container makes this world first even more significant.

When the glass dome is turned upside down, a fine shower of golden glitter covers the Haute Couture model in a fine coat of gold reminiscent of the 'snow scene' domes that children love to play with. The bottle is also technically innovative. There is no stopper to release the perfume; instead the fragrance is released when the dome is pressed onto the base. As BPI says: 'The bottle is amusing and audacious, modern and very feminine. And of course, pure Gaultier.'

Beauté Prestige International (a subsidiary of Shiseido) manufactures and distributes the Issey Miyake and Jean Paul Gaultier perfume brands. Formed in 1990 by Chantal Roos, the company's current managing director is Rémy Gomez.
