Just add sunshine for renewed gloss

Bayer MaterialScience AG : 01 March, 2005  (Company News)
Even gentle handwashing doesn
The current edition of research, the Bayer Scientific Magazine, reports how researchers at Bayer MaterialScience are tackling this problem with a new, environment-friendly coating and a little help from the sun.

Dull car paint is the result of many fine scratches such as those that occur in the car wash or even during handwashing. Even the tiniest of dirt particles on the sponge or brush can leave permanent microfurrows in the gloss coating. In the future, such scratches will simply disappear. Bayer researchers have developed a coating for which fine abrasions are nothing more than small ripples on a pond – a short time later, the surface is again mirror-smooth. The coating just needs to be warmed, and the summer sun is enough to do the trick.

The new coating’s flow properties also make it particularly environment-friendly. Because the components of the “2K-PUR Clear Coat”, as the coating is known, are also less viscous during application than those typically used before, the automakers can use less solvent, which is easier on the environment.

But a coating can’t be too yielding; it has to protect the underlying layers and needs to be able to withstand considerable chemical stress in the form of saltwater, tree resin or bird droppings. The Bayer researchers therefore not only improved the flow properties but also tightened the molecular network to make the coating even more resistant. Car owners can rest assured: the hardness of the coating offers protection against deeper abrasions and chipping, and small scratches simply disappear.
