Licensee network for new DuPont Delrin Decorating Solutions technology takes shape

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 31 August, 2005  (New Product)
DuPont has recently signed a global licensing agreement with the UK company Quality Plated Plastics for the metal plating of DuPont Delrin. It represents the latest step in the formation of a network of licensees who can offer a pre-treatment process, developed by DuPont, for the painting and plating of DuPont's acetal resin. The Slovenian company, Secaplast D.O.O., is an example of a global licensee for the painting process. On the basis of these developments, DuPont aims to encourage the development of plastic components for consumer goods, which combine function and aesthetics with the additional benefits of lower cost and increased productivity.

Marketed under the trademark of DuPont Delrin Decorating Solutions, the system comprises specially developed Delrin grades for plating and painting as well as water- and solvent-based coating solutions supplied by DuPont Performance Coatings. It provides manufacturers of consumer goods with greater design opportunities and flexibility than before, as Josep Ros, DuPont's functional aesthetics manager in Europe, explains. 'In the cosmetics industry, for example, there is now the potential for completely new shapes and forms which are both easy to assemble and match the dimensional variations of glass bottles used for cosmetics and perfumes. Designers and manufacturers can now enjoy all these benefits as well as producing highly attractive and aesthetic components.'

Market segments such as sporting goods, household appliances and sanitary products are also common areas of application for Delrin, where it is used for its metal-like properties and low coefficient of friction and wear. 'Using the new technology, such applications will now not only behave like metal, but will look like it, whilst maintaining the benefits of plastic,' say Ros. The company encourages those companies interested in exploring the benefits of the new technology to either contact DuPont directly, or through members of the licensee network.

Commenting on the global agreement for the plating of Delrin, QPP managing director John Timmins said he expected a huge potential for applications of the process with a strong focus on metal replacement. Among target markets and applications, the company has already identified a market for metal-plated Delrin door hinges.

With over 30 years of experience in the electro-plating of plastics, QPP was one of the first companies in the UK to commercially electro-plate plastics in a variety of metal finishes. One of the largest platers of plastic in Europe, it continues to invest in new product lines and technologies. Further information can be found at www.qualityplatedplastics.co.uk
