Lloyd Instruments achieve material success

Lloyd Instruments : 04 September, 2003  (New Product)
2003 has seen Lloyd Instruments strengthen its position as a world leader in materials testing solutions through a busy programmer of new product launches, services and business ventures. A number of custom solutions have been developed for various industries.
For the medical and pharmaceutical industry, a special fixture to test the strength of tracheal tube introducers in patient surgery was requested by a leading supplier, whilst a semi-automated system to test the firing mechanisms of 'one shot' pressurised metered dose inhaler canisters was developed for a pharmaceutical company. In both cases, testing efficiency was the key objective.

Tests on the behaviour of artificial hip joints prior to their application in patients are also being conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter. The new study is looking at the effect of shape designs and surface finishes on the performance and predicted lifetime of leading makes, including the 'Exeter Total Hip.' Test equipment includes a powerful 20kN EZ20 test machine, fitted with a special thermal cabinet to simulate body temperature conditions during testing.

For the food industry, a novel fixture to test the peel strength of heat sealed plastic film covers on food containers has been developed. This joins a long line of special grips and fixtures designed specially for the food industry, and follows the launch of the TA Plus food texture analyser, which is used in confectionery, bakery and general food manufacturing applications.

For the automotive industry, a novel Seat Belt Test System to test the strength of webbing materials used in vehicle seat belts and safety harnesses, has also been developed. It features a 50kN testing machine fitted with special split bollard grips, and the IR750 non-contact Infrared Extensometer. The rigid nature of the material and high forces involved meant a dedicated solution was needed. In another application, the company's latest LF Plus low force testing machine is being used to check there lease mechanisms of child car seat buckles to determine strength and ease of release.

For electronic components and cable manufacturers, a multifunction testing unit has also been developed to test electrical cables, insulated wires and switches such as keypads on mobile phones and membrane switches. As compressive forces are applied, the system is designed to measure any interruption in electrical current flow for a total test solution.

There have been a number of international projects too. A pioneering solution to examine the strength characteristics of aluminium at the point of casting has been developed for a leading aluminium converting company in France. This required Lloyd Instruments to design its first ever horizontal 30kN LR30KPlus testing machine, and include special software drivers for a seamless control of the test machine in the customer's Lab VIEW industry platform.

In terms of business, Lloyd Instruments also announced the acquisition of servo hydraulic testing specialists, DN Testing Systems from Plint & Partners Ltd. This move secures future development in this field, and builds on DN Testing's enviable reputation for quality and service. Great lengths have also gone into growing its 85-strong world-wide distributor network to provide the customer with the best possible local sales, service and applications support.
