Maintaining the pre-delivery surface quality of wooden furniture

3M Europe : 30 September, 2003  (New Product)
Surface protection films provide a simple, economic solution to eliminate the risk of spoiled products. Easily applied, and removed, from wooden work tops, tables and chairs, these films shield, protect and preserve surfaces efficiently in the complete spectrum of pre-delivery environments.
During the assembly process, showroom display and transportation, and final delivery of units, the surfaces of wooden furniture are at constant risk of abrasion and scratching. Ultimately every buyer wants a perfect, blemish-free product and therefore it makes good commercial sense for manufacturers and retailers to ensure that the buyers’ wishes are fulfilled.

Surface protection films provide a simple, economic solution to eliminate the risk of spoiled products. Easily applied, and removed, from wooden work tops, tables and chairs, these films shield, protect and preserve surfaces efficiently in the complete spectrum of pre-delivery environments.

During manufacture large components such as work tops are finished to await assembly at a later stage. This later process often requires a number of operations: jointing, planing, screwing and gluing for example, any of which has the potential to do damage. And, while these surfaces are generally quite resilient they can be sensitive to scratches from tools or to chemicals.

In the case of tables and chairs, which are usually manufactured from soft woods, exposure to impacts and scratches extends to handling and transportation. Moreover, in this age of furniture hypermarkets, products can also be subject to the seemingly trivial abrasions and minor impacts from a continuous flow of potential buyers placing objects, such as shopping, on tables and sitting in chairs with keys or other sharp items in their pockets.

The risk of damage is present throughout transportation to the point of delivery, including carrying furniture through a house to its intended location. Until it is finally placed the risk lies with the supplier. If protected with appropriate film that risk is virtually non-existent.

Available in four colours and in a range of thicknesses and adhesive strengths from 0.1 N/cm to 1.9 N/cm, 3M™ Surface Protection Film provides the optimum shield against minor, troublesome damage. 3M’s custom films adds a further five colours to the product basket and a variation of thicknesses between 35 and 120 microns, together with a choice of widths in a range between 20 and 2540mm on rolls up to 3000m in length.
