Materials stewardship toolkit for mineral and metal production managers

International Council On Mining And Metals (ICMM) : 31 January, 2014  (Company News)
ICMM’s latest toolkit is an online resource that provides tools and industry-specific case studies of materials stewardship in practice. It is aimed at managers with corporate or operational responsibilities related to the production of minerals and metals.
The Materials Stewardship Toolkit complements the ICMM guidance document Maximizing Value: guidance on implementing materials stewardship in the minerals and metals value chain. Maximizing Value sets out why materials stewardship is important. This toolkit focuses on how to implement the guidance document.

Materials stewardship is about companies contributing to sustainability by making the best use of intelligent design and application of technology to increase recoveries, by extending the resource base through reduced losses, by reducing the use of materials per unit of production, by diverting "waste" materials to productive uses and by restoring resources such as land and water to productive use.

At the same time materials stewardship is about the management of those materials throughout their life cycle. The toolkit will assist the mining and metals industry in understanding and responding to customers in ways that allow informed discussion and decisions.

"Materials stewardship is based on a sense of shared responsibility for the resources we utilize and the materials we create", says Dr John Atherton, Director, Materials Stewardship at ICMM. "This toolkit will assist companies in delivering this through good practice."

ICMM is inviting organizations to submit further materials stewardship case studies
