New & fairer cattle compensation tables come into force

Defra : 01 February, 2006  (Company News)
A new and fairer compensation scheme based on table valuations comes into force for cattle in England affected by certain diseases.
A new and fairer compensation scheme based on table valuations comes into force for cattle in England affected by certain diseases.

The new table valuations will be introduced in two stages:

Today bovine tuberculosis, Brucellosis and Enzootic Bovine Leukosis, and
1st March for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy

Defra consulted in October 2004 on proposals to introduce a new table based cattle compensation system. The new scheme will offer value for money for taxpayers and provide fair compensation to affected cattle owners.

Animal welfare minister Ben Bradshaw said:

'Bovine TB is the most serious animal health problem that we currently face in Great Britain.

TB compensation, particularly, is a significant cost that is currently borne entirely by the taxpayer, 34 million in 2003-04 for GB. The new compensation arrangements would better protect the taxpayer, by addressing the serious 'over-compensation' problem identified by independent reviewers, promote good industry practice, and enhance disease control by facilitating the speedier removal of diseased animals.'
