New ABB technology expands Yanshan's ethylene capacity

ABB has announced that the SINOPEC Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Company's ethylene complex in Beijing, China has passed the performance test for the expansion project. The expanded ethylene capacity is now 710,000 metric tons per annum.

This latest expansion marks a major milestone. Three new ethylene technology features were implemented in the expansion, the joint technology heater, Binary Refrigeration system and CDHydro(r) MAPD conversion. The plant started up at the higher capacity in November 2001.

The heaters are the first cracking furnaces designed by the ABB Lummus Global and SINOPEC TECH alliance, and were successfully commissioned last year and started up in record time. The joint technology heater provides state-of-the-art performance including high olefins yield, long run-length and high thermal efficiency.

The Binary Refrigeration system for cryogenic cooling was commissioned in November 2001. The Binary Refrigeration system, which combines methane and ethylene refrigeration systems, requires less power for cryogenic fractionation and leads to significant savings in capital investment. Stable operation at Yanshan has demonstrated that the Binary Refrigeration system is reliable, flexible and efficient.

The CDHydro process combines reaction and distillation in a single step that simplifies the process, saves plot space and reduces the cost of equipment. Yanshan is the first application of the CDHydro process for MAPD conversion. Packed catalyst beds installed in the rectifying section of the depropanizer selectively hydrogenate MAPD into propylene. Selectivity improvement is more than 30 percent over normal fixed bed MAPD reactors.

The plant was originally designed by ABB Lummus Global in 1973 with a capacity of 300,000 MTA, and expanded to 450,000 MTA in 1994 utilizing ABB technology.
