ESAB Automation's new large Alpharex XXL laser cutting system allows cutting of sheet metal in up to 28-metre lengths. It is ideal for work which primarily involves cutting large items, usually in 8mm or 10mm gauges, which cannot be handled by standard laser cutting machines.
The system includes a CO2 laser with an output of 4 kilowatts. This level of laser power not only allows faster cutting but is also ideal for preparing items for welding by providing bevelled edges. Whilst many workpieces may not take up the entire working area available with the Alpharex XXL, the space that is not needed for a particular job can be stocked with items to be cut later. The result is virtually no 'down' time. Furthermore, the system's guidance accuracy also achieves very high speed positioning rates.
On the Alpharex XXL, the laser and its control rack are mounted on top of the gantry carriage and are transported by the gantry as it moves along the longitudinal axis. On the transverse axis, the laser beam is transmitted to the cutting head by flying optics. This approach provides high-quality cut edges all over the workpiece.
Fully enclosed laser cutting systems can often hinder loading and offloading operations, and the protective safety enclosures on such systems are frequently and illegally either partially or totally removed in order to improve accessibility. To give better accessibility, ESAB's Pro-Las 1 safety system used with the Alpharex XXL has been confined to safeguards at locations where hazards originate, allowing the working area to be readily loaded and off-loaded without causing any radiation hazards.
The Sub Contract, shipbuilding industry, railway industry, steel-construction industry, and the entire machine-tool and industrial equipment industries are typical of the many areas where the Alpharex XXL could be used, indeed wherever sheet-metal structures that require extra-large, sheet-metal components. |
