New CMOS Photo-Schmitt-trigger photo detector offers low power consumption

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc.today announced the release of a highly sensitive photo detector that combines the efficiency enabled by CMOS technology with the high performance of Vishay's Photo-Schmitt-Trigger standard.

With low power consumption, a low supply voltage, and a wide operating temperature range, the TEKS6400 photo detector with logic output provides designers with a reliable, higher-performing alternative to the TEKS5400, the current bipolar photo detector solution. The new TEKS6400 is designed to serve as a steering angle encoder for ESP in automotive systems and as an optical shaft encoder and transmissive or reflective sensor in end products such as printers, copiers and mobile phones.

The new CMOS photo detector features a low supply current of just 45 μA, and a supply voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V, making it very attractive to use especially for battery-driven equipment. The TEKS6400 provides reliable operation over a broad temperature range of -40C to +85C and features a maximum junction temperature of 100C. The device's maximum output current is 20 mA and maximum power dissipation is 50 mW.

Packaged in a miniature plastic package measuring 5 mm by 5 mm with a height profile of 2.65 mm, Vishay's new photo detector features a spherical side-view lens with a 30 angle of half-sensitivity. The device's very high photosensitivity provides high EMI suppression and an integrated daylight filter that is spectrum-matched to IR emitters with a wavelength of 950 nm. The TEKS6400's threshold irradiance is 40 μW/cm.

The TTL and CMOS-compatible photo detector features logic output - with open collector output and a low output signal, if IR light is 'on' - and a digital interface to the logic IC. It is available in FSZ standard fan-fold packing. For complete optical sensor solutions, Vishay recommends its package-compatible TSKS5400 IR emitter.

Samples and production quantities of the TEKS6400 are available now, with lead times of six weeks for larger orders.
