New generation of insulator coating

Dow Corning launched its Sylgard brand High Voltage Insulator Coating Plus (HVIC+), a new generation of high voltage insulator coating, at the IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference & Exposition held in Dallas, Texas, September 8-10, 2003.
Dow Corning launched its Sylgard brand High Voltage Insulator Coating Plus (HVIC+), a new generation of high voltage insulator coating, at the IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference & Exposition held in Dallas, Texas, September 8-10, 2003.
“Utility maintenance engineers around the world have relied on Sylgard High Voltage Insulator Coating (HVIC) for more than 25 years to protect against power distribution interruptions due to arcing and flashover from salt spray, industrial pollutants, and even desert sand,” said Vittorio Salvatori, Dow Corning global marketing manager, Electrical Industry.
“Sylgard HVIC+ improves on the original RTV coating to provide the best combination of wet electrical performance, tracking resistance, and durability that will assure utility engineers years of reliable operation,” Salvatori said. “Improvements in the wet product also make application easier and faster, reducing labor cost and downtime.”

New Sylgard HVIC+ offers:
- Long-term water repellency/hydrophobicity. This is invaluable to high voltage applications because without it contaminants on the surface of the insulators become wet and produce a conductive layer, which contributes to an increase in leakage currents, dryband arcing, and ultimately flashover.
- Resistance to atmospheric and chemical degradation. The coated insulators remain unaffected by salt air, airborne pollutants, rain or humidity.
- Resistance to arcing and corona. Sylgard HVIC+ exhibits high tracking resistance to reduce damage during salt storms or other severe contamination events.
Sylgard HVIC+ can be used in applications including:
- Glass, porcelain and composite insulators where improved surface dielectric properties are needed
- Line and station insulators, as well as bushings, instrument transformers and related devices
- Increasing the surface resistance of bucket truck booms
- Other applications requiring arc resistance, such as barrier boards used in switch gear and in large motors
Sylgard HVIC+ requires only one application, eliminating the need for repeated water washing or greasing, which results in significant savings in maintenance and replacement costs.

The unique physical properties of silicone rubber technology can help avoid power outages, extend or eliminate maintenance intervals and reduce costs in electrical utility service. Dow Corning’s materials demonstrate excellent insulating capabilities, fire safety, water repellency and good environmental properties. They include Dow Corning brand HV Silicone Rubber for High Voltage Insulators, Sylgard® brand High Voltage Insulator Coating and 561 Silicone Transformer Fluid.

• Dow Corning brand HV Silicone Rubber for high voltage insulators, arrestors and accessories are designed for all power transmission and distribution applications.
• Sylgard brand High Voltage Insulator Coating (HVIC) for insulators maintenance is a cured silicone elastomeric coating designed to improve the flash over resistance performance of porcelain and glass high-voltage insulators, arresters and other components, especially where high surface pollution contamination causes arcing problems.
• 561 Silicone Transformer Fluid is a pure silicone fluid that is considered to be the most safe of all transformer fluid candidates. As indicated by its higher flash and fire points, this fluid offers greater resistance to oxidation and fire than mineral oil or competing less-flammable fluids.
