New generation of machining steels

Sandvik Coromant UK : 23 February, 2000  (Company News)
Ongoing product development of its Sanmac machining steels has enabled Sandvik Steel to announce the launch of a new generation of stainless steel bar and hollow bar which offer improved machining characteristics and a potential doubling a cutting tool life.
The new generation Sanmac offers better machine utilisation through improved cutting speeds and feed rates as well as more pieces per cutting tool. Potential user benefits include faster throughput, longer tool life, reduced stoppage time and therefore, reduced overhead costs.

In machining tests, with Sanmac stainless steel bar and hollow bar grades AISI 304, 304L, 316, and 316L, a doubling of tool life can be shown, a performance which Sandvik claim is well ahead of the competition.

As well as the improved properties two new grades have been confirmed as part of the standard range of bar steels available.

One new grade, designated Sanmac 4571 (AISI 316Ti) is Titanium alloyed to improve structural stability. Machining characteristics are comparable to those of Sanmac 316L.

The other, Sanmac 4435, is a special applications machining grade based on AISI 316L but with 2.5% molybdenum content.

The stock standard bar grades are AISI 304/304L/316 and 316L and the duplex stainless steel SAF 2205. Starting at 20mm diameter, all grades can be produced to a new maximum size of 500mm diameter. All Sanmac bar is manufactured in accordance with the new Euro Norm (EN) standards for bar steel and is supplied in the peel turned, or peel turned and polished condition, depending on diameter.

Sanmac hollow bar is available in standard AISI grades 304/304L/316 and 316L and in the modified 316/316L grade Sanmac 4435 with 2.5% molybdenum. Manufactured in a size range from 26mm - 250mm diameter, hollow bar is supplied in stock lengths of 2m to 7 metres. Fixed lengths can be produced to order.

Key features in the supply of Sanmac bar and hollow bar are Sandvik Steel's production and distribution capabilities.

Production is located centrally at Sandvik's manufacturing plant in Sweden. This enables close control and monitoring of material properties from melt to melt and guarantees consistent machining quality from batch to batch. There is a fully automated central warehouse containing approximately 600 individual product items and there are distribution centres and regional stocks, with cutting facilities, in Europe, NAFTA, Asia and the Far East.

The launch of new generation Sanmac is being supported by a new 6 page brochure and a 40 page technical product handbook. Copies can be obtained from AB Sandvik Steel, SE 811-81, Sandviken, Sweden.
