New grades for new solutions

New polymer products and grades recently launched by DuPont Engineering Polymers underline the company's commitment to meeting market and customer needs. Intended to offer designers and OEMs more design freedom, or as a response to new and demanding environmental conditions, DuPont's additions to its polymer portfolio result from a renewed external focus.

Delrin
New Delrin 311DP provides a good combination of both flow and toughness, increasing the possibility to fill moulds for thinner and complex parts whilst matching the required mechanical specifications. DuPont has also developed two new grades based on lubrication technology. These resins, Delrin500AL and Delrin100AL, help eradicate the squeaking noise generated by plastic components. And in response to demands from the automotive industry to develop black laser transparent grades, a new product, Delrin500LM BKL002, is now commercial.

A further development is to be found in the field of two component moulding: joint research by DuPont and Pongs & Zahn (Germany) has resulted in modified grades such as high-viscosity grade Delrin 142CM, and the medium-viscosity grade Delrin 542CM, which stick to modified grades of Ponaflex1 styrene based thermoplastic elastomer. Typical applications for this new material combination in two-component moulding technology include fasteners and clips with integral seals.

Polyesters
The newly developed flame-retardant Rynite FR531 PET was developed to meet very stringent heat and electrical requirements. It is an excellent insulator with high CTI performance and sustained temperatures of up to 200 C do not affect its properties. New flame-retardant Crastin HF672FR provides the opportunity for increased manufacturing productivity. Its high flow properties mean that long, thin-walled cavities can be filled both quickly and reliably.

A limiting factor for PBT in automotive or electrical applications is its relatively low hydrolysis resistance. DuPont Crastin has developed a wide range of products that have shown a significant improvement in this area and, in addition, they exhibit enhanced flow versus more traditional grades. HR5115HF and HR5130HF are the 15 and 30 per cent glass reinforced products respectively, and pass the stringent USCAR Class 3 and 4 quality standards. And Crastin S700, an unreinforced PBT, has been developed to help with vibration absorption in mechanisms or levers. Typically, it is used to insulate or block vibrations from car bodies to accessories, such as headlamps, where vibration can be a problem.

Zytel
Zytel HTN bridges the performance gap between conventional engineering resins and high-end speciality polymers. Its very good processability and unique balance of chemical, moisture and temperature resistance makes it an ideal candidate to take on the challenge of demanding environmental conditions. The recent introduction of two new series, '53' and '54', have broadened the existing range. They have been engineered for structural applications requiring high stiffness and impact resistance with low moisture absorption. Both resins can be processed in water heated tools.

New Zytel EFE 1166 can offer significant productivity increases: its remarkably fast crystallisation time can mean a 20 per cent and more reduction in injection moulding cycle times. And Zytel ST 'Advantage', a range of new polyamide Super Tough resins based upon unique DuPont technology, give radically improved flow characteristics to provide the potential for major processing benefits and cost saving opportunities. These include reduced cycle times, reduced moulding pressures, an increased number of cavities for moulding larger parts, reduced section thickness and lower reject levels.

Hytrel
A tailored CVJ boot grade of Hytrel thermoplastic polyester resin displays better abrasion and chemical resistance, which in turn enables CVJ boots to be downsized, saving system costs. Following an agreement with leading rotomoulding distributor ICO, a special range of Hytrel grades have also been launched for the rotomoulding industry.

Vespel
The Vespel parts and shapes business has introduced 'dry' bearing components for electrical motors. The concept, patented by DuPont, is designed to eliminate the lubrication currently required for powder metal impregnated solutions. It uses a 'Hybrid Vespel/elastomer' part, where the Vespel S inner bearing provides the wear and friction benefits while the overmoulded elastomer performs as a dampener in the system. Vespel TP parts have been successfully tested by several manufacturers as seal rings in automatic transmissions. Resins for these parts, such as TP 8556, are specially designed to ease OEM assembly concerns and to provide the long wear life necessary for today's designs. In the semiconductor manufacturing industry, where designers are developing new equipment with ever greater levels of energy, Vespel TP has demonstrated superior etch resistance with the added benefit of higher design flexibility.
