New heat-resistant, high-strength plastic stock shapes have thermal expansion of steel

The dimensional stability of Torlon 7130 is outstanding. The material has a coefficient of thermal expansion of 0.5 x 10-5,in./in./F. Torlon 7130 is the only plastic material with a coefficient of expansion matching steel, eliminating fit and clearance problems. The CLTE of Torlon 7130 is 25% lower than the CLTE of aluminum (1.25 x 10-5 in/in/F).

New grades of Torlon polyamide-imidehe are available exclusively from DSM.

Torlon 7130 has a flexural modulus near 3 million psi at room temperature. At 450 F, the flexural modulus of Torlon 7130 is over 2 million psi. Additionally, Torlon 7130 has exceptional fatigue strength, withstanding 107 cycles at 6500 psi at 350 F.

Torlon 7130 has a low coefficient of friction and fairly high thermal conductivity. These factors result in low-heat generation and quick dissipation, and combine with high load carrying capability and good wear resistance, to make Torlon 7130 an ideal candidate for heavy-duty wear and friction applications.

Torlon 5030, at room temperature, has a tensile strength of 30,000 psi and a flexural modulus of 1.7 million psi. Compared to other engineering plastics at room temperature, Torlon 5030 is over 25% stronger than glass-fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone and over 50% stronger than non-reinforced PAI stock shapes. At 450 F, Torlon 5030 is stronger than the room temperature values of nylon, acetal, polypenylene sulphide and PEEK. The tensile strength of Torlon 5030, at 450 F, is 16,000 psi and the flexural modulus is 1.4 million psi. At temperatures over 300 F, Torlon 5030 is stronger and stiffer than T-6 aluminum.

The CLTE of Torlon 5030 is 0.9 x 10-5 in./in./F. Torlon 5030 also has outstanding dielectric strength (84O v/ mil), as well as excellent radiation resistance, withstanding proton-beam exposure of 109 rads.

DSM offers Torlon 5030 and Torlon 7130 rod in -in. through 1-1/2-in. diameter, in 48-in. lengths.

There are many potential structural and dynamic applications for Torlon 5030 and 7130, including:

Aircraft and aerospace - Torlon shapes provide a way to produce high tolerance, lightweight parts in low volumes, quickly and economically
Fuel system thermal insulators
Electrical insulators and wire managers
Gears, splines and shafts
Propulsion unit components

Fasteners (nuts, bolts, etc.) also can be machined of Torlon 5030 or 7130 rod, where it offers high strength, excellent thermal and corrosion resistance and low CLTE, eliminating fit and tolerance problems.

Poppets and spools, for high-pressure hydraulic systems (to 3000 psi), can be made of Torlon 5030. The lower leakage of 5030 enables higher system pressures, which can allow smaller systems to do the same work as a traditional 1,500-psi system.
