New Initiative to Capture Critical Raw Materials from Waste Electronics

Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) : 04 January, 2016  (Company News)
Each year around 9.9 million tonnes of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) is generated in the EU. WEEE is a rich potential source of recovered materials. Due to poor collection and recycling rates and processes that can only recover a small number of materials, many critical and valuable materials are lost from the system.
The Critical Raw Material Recovery project is working to ensure that a wider range of minerals and metals are recovered during recycling of WEEE.

Funding available

The project will commission a series of WEEE collection and recovery trials. This is to better understand the impact collection methods can have on material recovery potential. The recovery trials will focus on maximising material recovery using new or established processes. The trials are to be delivered in the UK (with a preference for Welsh activity), Germany, Italy and Turkey. They will focus on the collection of Display, ICT, Consumer Electronics and small mixed WEEE as these are rich in the target materials for recovery. The target materials are graphite, cobalt, antimony, tantalum, rare earths, silver, gold and platinum group metals.
