New non-halogen flame retardant cable insulation

The general trend toward non-halogen flame retardant cable insulation is now materialising. A number of major cable suppliers are launching new products to challenge those traditionally used for installation, data, power and control cables as well as flexible cords for white goods, vacuum cleaners, lamps etc. Borealis is participating actively in this development by offering a range of easily extrudable products for this application. The products are based mainly on the patented Casico concept - calcium carbonate + silicone gum + oxygen containing copolymer (EBA or EEA).

A number of major cable suppliers are launching new products to challenge those traditionally used for installation, data, power and control cables as well as flexible cords for white goods, vacuum cleaners, lamps etc.

Borealis is participating actively in this development by offering a range of easily extrudable products for this application. The products are based mainly on the patented Casico concept - calcium carbonate + silicone gum + oxygen containing copolymer (EBA or EEA). Thermoplastic as well as moisture crosslinkable compounds based on Visico are also offered. In addition to ready-made compounds Borealis can also supply the components and licence for self-compounding and in-house tailor-made compounds. Such compounds can often be produced on the same type of compounding lines as are used for say, PVC cable grades. The relatively low-cost filler calcium carbonate made s the technology attractive and competitve also from cost point of view.
