Solvay Advanced Polymers Llc today announced the introduction of a new line of transparent colours of Radel R polyphenylsulphone, a high performance plastic known for its uncompromising toughness in reusable medical devices where it must withstand highly aggressive cleaners and disinfectants as well as repeated high-temperature, pressurised-steam sterilisation.
The inherent transparency of Radel R polyphenylsulphone has always provided a distinct advantage over metals and reinforced polymers used in high-performance applications, but until now was available only in an amber colour. The new grade, designated Radel R-5800 TR, is offered in a range of bright colours. This allows more flexibility in designs requiring transparency and provides more opportunities to differentiate products in the market place. The initial colour offering includes blue, violet, red, fuchsia, orange, yellow and black. Custom colours are also available.
Radel R-5800 TR delivers the same high level of performance as the original amber coloured material. With a heat deflection temperature of 207C (405F), it can withstand continuous exposure to heat and still absorb tremendous impact without cracking or breaking. It has excellent hydrolytic stability, is inherently flame retardant, and offers exceptional resistance to bases and other chemicals.
Typical applications for Radel R-5800 TR include medical cases, trays and lids, as well as sight glasses, face shields, appliance components and high-temperature lighting components.
