New solenoid made with DuPont Zytel HTN withstands aggressive chemicals and cuts costs

Relying on DuPont Zytel HTN high-performance polyamide and thermoplastic encapsulation technology, Wabash Magnetics Control Products has developed a cost-cutting solenoid coil that stands up in demanding environments. Wabash supplies the encapsulated solenoid to South Bend Controls of South Bend, Ind., for use in that company's family of Inert Isolation Valves for laboratory and industrial equipment and instruments. The valves are engineered to control the flow of high-purity or aggressive fluids including reagents, alcohol, sodium hypochlorite, formaldehyde, and sodium hydroxide.

Wabash supplies the encapsulated solenoid to South Bend Controls of South Bend, Ind., for use in that company's family of Inert Isolation Valves for laboratory and industrial equipment and instruments. The valves are engineered to control the flow of high-purity or aggressive fluids including reagents, alcohol, sodium hypochlorite, formaldehyde, and sodium hydroxide.

'The high-performance polyamide provides excellent resistance to aggressive chemicals and cleaning agents encountered in the valves' service environment,' says Brad Callis, project engineer at Wabash Magnetics Control Products. 'Zytel HTN also allows us to meet global electrical safety standards developed by Underwriters Laboratories and the International Electrotechnical Commission with minimal testing.

The resin grade used by Wabash, Zytel HTN51G35HSL, is part of a complete pretested and preapproved electrical insulation system that's recognized for compliance with UL 1446 Class B (130C) requirements. The EIS is one of more than 400 such systems available to companies using DuPont engineering polymers and insulation materials in combination with off-the-shelf components and materials from other suppliers. Thermoplastic encapsulation technology allows Wabash to produce solenoids at substantially lower cost than metal-encased solenoids previously used by South Bend Controls. Using a coil form also molded from DuPont Zytel HTN, Wabash winds and terminates the solenoid's magnet wire and then places the coil in a metal frame. This assembly is then over-molded, producing a fully encapsulated part in a single step with no secondary finishing required and no emission of volatile organic compounds.

Thanks to astute design of the coil form and control of molding conditions and to the use of the same material for both the bobbin and outer shell, the encapsulated solenoid is highly resistant to liquid penetration, which would play havoc with internal electrical components.
